How to turn a TikTok video into a written recipe
By Cayden and Eden, Recola's founders. Updated .
To turn a TikTok into a recipe by hand, pause the video at each step and type out the ingredients and amounts, checking the caption and comments for what the video skips. It works, and it takes ten minutes a recipe.
Recola does it for you. Share the TikTok to Recola and it reads the video, the audio, the caption and the creator's pinned comments, then writes out the ingredients with amounts and the steps in order.
The free way: write it out
All it costs is time.
Read the caption first
Tap more on the caption. Many creators put the amounts there, or in a pinned comment.
Pause and type
Play the video step by step and write down each ingredient and what happens to it, in a note.
It works, but it is slow, easy to get wrong, and the note ends up apart from the video and every other recipe you have.
With Recola: it writes itself
Recola is an iPhone app for everything you save.
Share the video
On the TikTok, tap the Share arrow, then More in the row of apps. If you don't see it, scroll the row to the end.
Pick Recola
In the iPhone share sheet, tap Recola, or Save to Recola in the list under the apps. The first time, you may need to tap More to find it. After that it stays in reach.
Tap Done and keep scrolling
Recola confirms the save in about a second. It reads the video while you carry on, and lets you know when it has been filed.
Read the recipe
Open it in Recipes: ingredients with amounts, steps in order, and a timer on any step with a time in it.

What you get back
- Ingredients with amounts. An amount the video never states is estimated and marked, so you know to check it.
- The steps in order, each with a tap-to-start timer when it has a time.
- Servings you can change, with the amounts following.
- A shopping list grouped by aisle, ready to send.
- The original video one tap away.
